SERIES READING AND READERS TO LEADERS

Practice makes perfect! We need our students to choose to practice reading as much as they can during the day and at home. Thus, we are beginning our adventures with reading books in series. Series books are an easy way to get students into the habit of reading one book after another and support a lifelong love of reading.

Our students have received their new Series Book Log. This book log will be kept inside the blue Home-School planner. Each student is responsible for completing the log as each book in a series is read in its entirety. These books should be read alone by the student and may be count towards nightly reading homework. If that is the case, please make sure that your child completes and returns the weekly homework log separately. As each goal is reached, the students will be awarded a new badge to add to their new Readers to Leaders chain.

WHAT IS THE FIRST GOAL?

Getting Started Tag:  Finished your first book in a series and are starting your second in a series.

March Madness With Principal Phillips

How lucky for us that our amazing principal came to read to every class in our school for her version of "March Madness". We loved having you read to us Mrs. Phillips! Thank you very much!

“Sleepover” Project

In conjunction with our sleepover unit, we are  asking each student to create a homemade teddy bear. A pattern was sent home last week and is available here for download. Please allow your child to be actively involved in this creative process. The bear can be made out of fabric and decorated however your child chooses. We encourage you not to go to Build A Bear because we really want the students to make the bear. This is intended to be a creative and fun addition to the regular homework. It is very important that each child has his/her own bear for this special day. Please make sure your child’s bear is sent in by Friday, February 8th. All of the bears will be on display in the front entrance of the school for the week of our PTA Family Night and the Sleepover events. Thank you for your help and support during this exciting time in your child’s school life.

P.S. If you are willing to make extra bears, please let us know!

Flag Raising: A Tradition

Flag Raising is a tradition in Duval County Public Schools. Once a month, our entire learning community at Chets Creek Elementary gathers around the flag pole for Flag Raising. During this time, we salute our flag and show respect for our rights. Often, we have a student from Chets sing the national anthem. Seeing our entire community come together in such a respectful manner is an inspiring sight to see. We encourage our parents to join us. Please check your child's weekly newsletter for upcoming dates.

Chets Creek Elementary School is having a Read-a-thon. Instruction sheets and login information will be sent home on Monday, February 26. Below is an example of what your child's information sheet includes.

We have decided to raise money by focusing on reading for the next few weeks. This is such a great opportunity for us to keep our focus on education and still raise the money we need. Best of all it only takes a few minutes to activate your account and we really need everyone to participate. Simply follow the steps below.

Step 1: Go to www.read-a-thon.com/readers/

Go to www.read-a-thon.com/readers on your personal computer, smart phone, or tablet and enter the secret code below to access your secure Read-a-thon account. Your Secret Code: customized for each student

Step 2: Create Your Profile

You will be guided through a few simple steps to activate your Read-a-thon account like adding a photo and sharing the Read-a-thon through social media and email. You also get a free prize just for creating your profile.

Step 3: Track Your Reading Sessions Online

Reading sessions are tracked online in your Read-a-thon account. You can use the fun reading session timer or log a reading session after you have already completed your reading time. Your participation not only helps us reach our goal but promotes reading skills at the same time. It only takes a few minutes to help us with this fundraiser!

Our first reading session will begin on March 5, 2018. This is a great opportunity for our school and all of our students. We hope that you join us in this Reading Adventure!
