Dear Parents and Guardians:
Our new unit of study in writing is Opinion Writing –
Writing Reviews. To launch the unit, we are asking that your child bring to
school one of his/her small personal collections. There should be no more than
five items in the collection.
Collections may include, but are not limited, action figures, cards,
beanie babies, racecars, Barbie dolls, or hair bows, etc… First-graders will
learn how to appreciate the power and purposes of writing opinion pieces. Children
will sort, rank, categorize, explain, convince, and persuade each other using
their collections as a basis for discussion. Students will learn the important
academic work of opinion writing in ways that are exactly suited to six and
seven year olds.
Please have collections (housed in the bag attached) in by, Thursday, November 29th. We can’t
wait to get started on our new writing unit.
*Your child’s collections
should be 5 of a
similar thing, such as, 5 different race cars, or 5 different sharks’ teeth,
etc…
